How Many Days Until — and How We Work It Out

“How many days until Christmas?” sounds like a question with one answer, but it has at least three, and the difference between them is why two countdown sites can disagree by a day.

The first variable is your time zone. A countdown calculated on a server in one country will be a day out for readers in another. Every countdown on this site is calculated in your own browser using your device clock, so the number you see always agrees with the date on your phone.

The second is whether today counts. Some tools count today as day one, so their answer is always one higher than ours. We count whole days remaining: 1 means tomorrow, and 0 means today. The third is simply that some holidays move — which is worth understanding if you plan around them.

The Holidays That Move Every Year

Christmas is always 25 December and New Year’s Day is always 1 January. Plenty of other major dates are not fixed at all — they are defined by a rule, and the rule produces a different date each year.

HolidayThe ruleRange
EasterFirst Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 MarchCan fall anywhere from 22 March to 25 April
Thanksgiving (US)Fourth Thursday in November22–28 November
RamadanFollows the lunar Hijri calendarMoves about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year
Black FridayThe day after US Thanksgiving23–29 November
Memorial Day (US)Last Monday in May25–31 May
Labor Day (US)First Monday in September1–7 September

This is why a countdown is more useful than a memory for these dates. Every countdown on our events page applies the correct rule for the year you are in, so a moving holiday resolves to the right day without you having to check a calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the number of days until a date calculated?

We compare today's date with the target date in your own device's time zone and count the whole days between them. The countdown recalculates every time you load the page, so it is never stale — and because it runs in your browser rather than on a server, it always matches the date your phone or laptop thinks it is.

Why does another site show a different number of days?

Almost always one of two reasons. The first is time zones: when it is already the 4th in Sydney and still the 3rd in Los Angeles, any honest countdown will differ by a day depending on where it is calculated. The second is inclusive counting — some tools count today as day one, which makes their number one higher than ours.

Do you count today as one of the days?

No. We count the whole days remaining, so a countdown showing 1 day means the event is tomorrow, and 0 means it is today. This is the convention most people expect when they ask how many days are left.

Why does Easter move every year?

Easter is calculated from a lunar rule rather than a fixed calendar date: it falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March. That makes it the most variable major holiday in the Western calendar, swinging across more than a month between 22 March and 25 April.

Can I count down to something that is not a holiday?

Yes. Use the custom countdown at the top of this page to pick any future date — a birthday, a wedding, a exam, a flight, a product launch or a deadline. The countdown works the same way, and the date you enter never leaves your browser.

Can I count how many days have passed since a date?

Yes. The Days Since section on this page counts backwards instead of forwards, which is useful for anniversaries, sobriety milestones, how long you have been in a job, or how long ago something launched.
